How Do I Clean My Blackout Shades?

Keeping your new custom blackout shades clean not only helps them to look their best, it also helps keep allergens at bay. Depending on the fabric, your blackout shades may become dirty quicker than other types of window treatments.

Because of the unique fabrics and embossing on your privacy shades, you’ll need to take special care when cleaning them so the shades keep their light-blocking abilities. To properly clean and care for your roman blackout shades, keep these tips in mind:

  • Never use magnetic or electrostatic cleaners like dust mitts on your blackout shades. They will damage the fabric’s light- and UV-blocking abilities.
  • If needed, spot clean your shades with lukewarm water and a small amount of mild soap and allow them to air dry. Do not immerse the shades in water.
  • To avoid permanent creasing in the delicate fabric, be careful not to rub too hard while cleaning.
  • Use the dusting attachment on your vacuum cleaner on the low setting to gently remove surface dirt and dust.
